Italy - Cycle the Adriatic - Venice to Porec (8days)

Following the northernmost tip of the Mediterranean, this unique ride takes you through stunning countryside, and encompasses three countries - all in one week! Starting in a city that needs little introduction, the beautiful and inspiring streets of Venice set the scene for the journey to come. From here the route heads eastwards, hugging the Adriatic coast, allowing the perfect opportunity to indulge in some of the long stretches of tempting golden beaches.

Heading into the region of Friuli, you will pass sleepy fishing communes and the fascinating star-shaped city of Palmanova before turning south, drawn by the lure of the Istrian coast. Crossing the borders of Italy, Slovenia and Croatia, it is hard to find a more fascinating concentration of rich culture anywhere else along the Adriatic. Arriving into your destination of Porec, this historic town offers the perfect resting point for a truly memorable week.

Day 1 - Start Mestre. Make your own way to Mestre

Day 2 - After only a few kilometres on the bike you will take a ferry and vaporetto to Punta Sabbioni, the southern most point of the Adriatic Coast. Leaving Venice behind the route then heads along the coast towards the city of Caorle. On the way to Caorle there

Day 3 - Leaving the coast behind, cycle north towards the Julian Alps. This route will take you through an area known for it's fish farms, or Valli da Pesca, and casoni fishing huts before arriving at Portogruaro.

Day 4 - Cycle east through the border region of Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia, an area charcterised by rivers, canals and ancient Roman towns. The route then continues to Palmanova.

Day 5 - Crossing the historic river Isonzo, setting of many a battle in the First World War, you head back towards the sea and on to the Gulf of Trieste. This route passes though the towns of Duino, Sistiana and Miramare, with its famous castle.

Day 6 - Today you cross the border into Slovenia. Heading mainly along cycle paths you will pass through the popular holiday resorts of Koper and Piran before reaching Portoroz, a town renown for its spa and bathing facilities.

Day 7 - Cycle South passing the salt mines of Secovljie, an area renown for its ornithology. The route then continues towards the Croatian border from which you will head down Istria, the Adriatic sea's largest peninsula before reaching Porec.

Day 8 - End Porec. Optional ferry back to Venice.
